This collection stewards documents and recordings related to the Tamil Digital Studies Project, a UTSC based initiative to develop an intellectually focused digital content hub that will encourage Tamil studies scholarship, and enable collaboration with faculty members for the purpose of mentoring and teaching skills that relate to best practices involved in the building and use of digital archival materials. This initiative also seeks to promote the intersection of Tamil computing and scholarship, and the development of the Digital Tamil Studies community.

Chelvanayakam Webinar

Description:
S. J. V. Chelvanayakam (1898-1977) was an extraordinarily significant political leader of the Tamil community in postcolonial Sri Lanka. As a leader, lawyer, and parliamentarian, Chelvanayakam’s life bears witness to significant political events in the island from the 1950s to the 1970s. His papers, consisting of voluminous correspondence, along with documents and pamphlets, were meticulously collected by Mr. Chelvanayakam’s daughter, Susili Chelvanayakam Wilson. The archive was then donated to the University of Toronto Scarborough Library by Susili Chelvanayakam Wilson and Mr. Chelvanayakam’s granddaughter, Malliha Wilson.

This webinar brings together international scholars and researchers speaking about the Chelvanayakam archive, colonial and postcolonial history, justice and law, historical memory, and the significance of digital archives in the modern world. This webinar introduces the Chelvanayakam fonds and is envisioned as an invitation to future community and research collaborations, storytelling, and the sharing of memory.

Funded by the Critical Digital Humanities Initiative and led by Dr. Bhavani Raman, this initiative produced open, tamil-language training materials introducing the Digital Humanities, and providing training on the open-source mapping platform QGIS. The instructor and designer is Shanmugapriya, a post-doctoral fellow with the Department of Historical and Cultural Studies.
